crews used alternative tactics to slow an out of control wildfire that is causing massive destruction near yosemite. good evening and at the for joining us. i'm ama states. the fire has burned 130,000 acres and it is just 7% contained. more than 5500 homes are threat threat -- threatened and 11 destroyed. the number could rise. john alston is live tonight with the latest on the fire. john? >> ama, one of the larger fires is on a hilltop behind me. this is south of highway 120 and exactly where authorities do not want this to go. the cost of the firefighting

effort so far is in the $8 million range. one weapon against the fire has been a pistol that shoots an insydney year device to burn the ground cover before the main fire can. today firefighters were able to get water on flames burning within yosemite. the park remains open, but highway 120 is still closed. along that road small fires flared into larger ones inan instant. >> for the first time in a week residents were allowed toh. see their property. korean gnaw and her brother originally from the bay area lost two homes with their family for years. the main house survived. >> so we feel super lucky to have this guy still standing which was my family home in high school. so, super close call for this

house. >> they were all custom houses and they were all cute tois plae this place look extra nice for guests. >> darma who lives on the property says firefighters did an admirable job. >> they were out here until the last second possible. we are thankful for those guys. they work hard and risk their lives to do this stuff. >> all day the sky was dominated by a massive mushroom cloud. the fire reached about two miles from the reservoir. it is san francisco's main water source. officials say so far water quality has not been affected. there is no evidence of ash in the water just yet. tomorrow could be brutal. officials with cal fire and the bureau of land management say they are expecting the possibility of winds of 40 miles an hour on some of the higher ridges with gusts up to 60 miles an hour. john alston, abc7 news. >> this map shows the growth of the rim fire. now, this pink outline shows

you how large the fire was yesterday. this morning it spread to this red outlined area. now the flames are burning into part of yosemite national park. this green line here is the park boundary. you can see where the flames have started to encroach on to park land. and you can see how much smoke is going up into the atmosphere from the fire. this picture was taken today from the international spacestation. and check out this picture. you can see how high the smoke is rising. this photo was taken out of the window of a plane, the smoke about 30,000 feet into the air. tonight the state has financial aid to help pay for fighting the rim fire. a grant from fema gives california the funds to reimburse firefighting expenses. govenor jerry brown has expanded the state of emergency to include san francisco. the fire is approaching the reservoir and three hydro electric power stations, two of which are now turned off as a precaution. the city is now using supplemental power supplies at a cost of more than $600,000.

and stay with abc7 news for cove yosemite rim fire and follow us on twitter at abc7 news bay area for updates. a 38-acre brushfire in el dorado county is 70% contained tonight. this cell phone video shows a cabin being burned down. pread and spreadut at 3:00 quickly. residents of 80 homes have been forced to evacuate. let's head to meteorologist leigh glaser for a look at conditions with live doppler 7hd. leigh? >> yes, and live doppler 7hd is picking up all of that smoke. you can see it right there. the gray matter on the map from a little to the north and east of yosemite village. that of course, all of that is blowing from the southwest to the northeast. so definitely very unhealthy air quality of course. the high fire dangers are still in affect for this region. let's get to some of the current conditions. the temperatures are still quite mild from 70 to 74

degrees and the relative humidity is 19%. they still have some southwest gusts to 30 miles an hour. that is around the 3,000 foot level. tomorrow the temperatures are near 90 degrees and still low relative humidity. it is sitting in the teens. it looks like there could possibly be even some isolated thunderstorms as we head into monday and tuesday. so not a lot of relief for those firefighters. ama? >> leigh, thank you so much. new at 11:00, police in san francisco are looking for two men after a woman was shot at a boutique dog hotel. she was working at the wag hotel on 14th and harrison about 7:00. police say the man shot her in the leg during an attempted robbery and then ran off. the woman is expected to recover. san jose police are investigating the 33rd murder of the year. officers responded to a shots fired call shortly after 1:00 this afternoon near north third and julian streets. they found a man shot at least once. he later died in the hospital. a man success -- a man suspected of stabbing his mother to death in marin city is under hospital guard.

officers found the body of 44-year-old rosa al night at last night at a home on coal drive.carlos carlos aldona was found covered with blood and carrying a knife boarding a transit bus. officers fired after they say aldona threatened them. an intense search after news of a missing toddler. daphne webb was reported missing by her father in oakland. now, details on the search. >> reporter: the family gathered in prayer before search teams headed out. dozens of volunteers and their dogs combed the trails looking for the 22-month-old girl. >> if he found something he would sit at the source and i would go running to see what was there. and then i would call him away because it would be a crime scene so we would want to preserve it as long as we could. >> daphne has been missing since july 10th and her

father continued to be a person of interest. he said his daughter disappeared when he left her in the car with his 87-year-old mother. they didn't say why they chose to search this spot, but they are committed as ever to solving this case. >> with the investigative team we have here, i am confident we will find out what happened to this baby. >> there were moments of hope during the search. they found shovels and a pick they thought could be related to daphne's disappearance. police even called in a helicopter to take aerial photos of the area. but in the end they came up empty. family members are holding out hope that daphne may be out there alive. >> on one hand i am relieved, but on the other hand we are still looking and still searching. we still want our baby back. >> oakland police say there is one more area they plan to search, but they won't say where or when just yet. in oakland, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> a five-year-old vallejo girl is being treated for serious injury after falling from a second story window. it happened on fair haven just

after 6:00. when the firefighters arrived the screen was off the window and the little girl was on the ground. she was airlifted to children's hospital. her condition has not been released. in palo alto, a cement truck driver died when his vehicle overturned. the accident happened just after 5:00 this morning and closed west middle field road for eight hours. the driver's body was found inside the truck. he was the only occupant. an accident between a motorcycle and an suv in san francisco sent two people to the hospital. it happened around 8:30. the motorcycle was going west on bay street when police say it turned into mason street in front of an suv. the collision sent both people on the cycle skidding under a parked car. new at 11:00, a man whose dog was malled by a pittbull is hoping the owners will come forward. the attack happened at a popular off leash park in san francisco's dog patch neighborhood. nick smith has the story. >> the next thing he knew she

was pinned on the back. >> he was taking skyler for a walk when the beagle and lab mix was attacked. >> within seconds she was in the pittbull's jaws and the pittbull was shaking her like a rag doll. >> these are the photos of the injury skyler sustained after being malled. deep punctures through her back and this major tear on her left side. a gaping wound that required multiple stitches. >> the question why he wasn't in control of his dog in the first place. >> he confronted the man he thought was the owner of the pittbull. >> they just started walking off. they were fleaing the -- fleeing the scene. >> a person who asked not to be identified captured it with his smart phone. officials tell abc7 news that the incident is under investigation and they are working to identify the pittbull and its owner. >> i have been coming here 25 years. >> those who use the park regularly are worried the negative publicity will give ammunition to the opponents of the off leash park. >> if one child is a bully or acts out in school, it ought

bay bridge closure. the bridge will close in just four days, late wednesday, august 28th. the closure will last up to five full days over the long labor day holiday. the bridge with its new eastern span will re-open by tuesday, september 3rd, the day after labor day. ac transit is offering bus service to some bart stations during the closure. bart will be operating trains

around the clock. san francisco bay ferry is expanding its schedule. if you have to drive during the shutdown download the traffic app. you can find details on abc7news.com. to help move along traffic on the bay bridge a toll lane is being converted to fast track. this is a live look at the toll plaza where the three farthest right happened lanes are closed this weekend. the toll lane closure runs through five monday morning. and you can take a look. there is a big slow down on the upper deck of the bay bridge as the cars head into san francisco. thousands gathered in washington, d.c. today at the site of martin luther king, junior's civil rights march. it was there 50 years ago that dr. king made his famous "have i a dream" speech. -- "i have a dream" speech. kristen fisher has the story. >> thousands came from all

>> members of the lgbt community who put together the rally paid homage to the organizer of the 1963 march. well, if the wildfire doesn't discourage you, you can get into yosemite for free tomorrow. all 401 national parks will offer free admission tomorrow in honor of the 97th anniversary. the park service was created on august 25th, 1916. and for a check on our weather let's get to leigh glaser on live doppler 7hd. >> live doppler 7hd is getting a little active. we have a weak cold front sitting off the coast and you can see it throwing some showers and heading to the north coast of california. but some of this might even move into extreme northern portions of our viewing area. so i wept ahead and put a chance of a few light showers overnight and tomorrow north of the golden gate bridge. there it is heading up toward cloverdale and ukiah. these are mainly light showers and we will continue to move

from southwest to northeast overnight tonight. we warmed up nicely today. the highs ranged from 87 in santa rosa and 81 san rafael. san francisco warmed to 67. we had 86 in antioch. 80 in san jose. santa cruz after the morning fog you warmed up to 79 degrees. the live shot from the rooftop cam, the embarcadero and san francisco is still mild at 62. we have 64 redwood city and san hoe says and los gatos. here is another shot of the golden gate bridge with the reduced visibilities and mist and drizzle as the fog is on the increase. 64 in novato and fairfield and livermore as well is checking in at 64 degrees. from our mount tam cam, you can see a bit of the fog and low cloudiness already starting to stretch over san francisco. we will look for increasing low cloudiness, mist, drizzle and fog. a chance of sprinkles north bay overnight tonight. tomorrow we will be partly cloudy and cooler as we get on the backside of the cold front.

then get ready for gradual warming into the middle of next week. temperatures tonight in the 50s. we will have the fog breaking out near the coast as well as the bay. here is a look at that cold front. it is holding together nicely. most of the energy stays to the north of us. it is the tail end right here that will swing on by. behind it a cooler air mass. get ready for the temperatures to come down tomorrow as much as 4 degrees in most locations. now let's get to the forecast and you can see at 11:00 it is already indicating a little moisture off the coast which is exactly what live doppler 7hd is picking up right now. let me take you through the evening. 2:00 a.m. is when we start to see a little activity move near the mendocino coast. it is pushing to the north and 5:00 a.m. still pushing to the north. you will notice by 7:00 and 8:00 tomorrow morning we will see a little more moisture start to feed out toward . reyes. point reyes.

we just put a slight chance of a morning shower north of the golden gate bridge. most locations won't see anything. get ready for a cooler afternoon tomorrow. 76 san jose. santa clara 75. our beach is overcast. it is only in the midto upper 50s for half moon bay and pacifica. 73 for men low park. san francisco form 65. in the north bay, santa rosa 75 and sonoma as well 75, 70 for oakland and union city and 70 degrees and 80,h 80, 80 for concord and 83 and very comfortable for brentwood. my accu-weather seven-day forecast, we will keep it steady. not a lot of increase in highs. monday and tuesday, and it will be wednesday and thursday and into friday the temperatures climb a few degrees. upper 80s inland and near 80 around the bay and 60s at the coast. not a bad forecast. maybe a sprinkle or two. >> thank you, leigh.ere with shu is here with sports and how are our bay area teams doing? >> a's are back on track

dilemma after last night's loss to the bears as to who will be his starting quarterback. flynn threw two interceptions as the raiders fell behind in the first half. in comes pryor leading the raiders to two td's and then running the 25 yarder in himself in the loss. coach alan said today he will go with the player who gives him the best chance to win. pryor said he will continue to work on his game. >> i am not looking to get into who is going to start. i just want this team. we have a lot of things to fix offensively and defensively. we'll get it down, but right now, you know, i am leaning on

i'm ama dates. in tonight's headlines, the week old rim fire in yosemite has burned nearly 200 square miles, and it is just 7%

contained. the fire continues to burn near the reservoir where san francisco gets the majority of its water. volunteers and cadaver dogs searched an area near college in oakland looking for missing toddler daphne webb. the police launched the search after receiving new information, but didn't say what it was. daphne has been missing for six weeks and her dad claimed he -- she disappeared out of his car. and an uh poirnt woman at a dog hotel was left with wounds. she was shot twice in the leg. she will be okay and police are searching for two male suspects. president obama held a white house meeting with his national security advisors to discuss the situation in syria. there are still concerns that syria may have used chemical weapons in the government's fight against insurgents. what does this mean for the united states? abc news chief global affairs correspondent with answers from the mideast. >> tonight evidence of a chemical attack in syria is

mounting. new images are showing the horror. the president spent the day huddled behind closed doors with his national security team weighing the evidence and his military options. >> we are still gathering information about this particular event. it is very troublesome. >> among the options on the table, targeting syrian military or government buildings with cruise missiles. they are in the mediterranean loaded with tomahawk missiles. u.s. fighter jets could attack firing from outside syrian airspace so pilots would be out of harm's way. >> the administration has been very forthcoming in saying that risk must be low. we cannot risk getting servicemen and women hurt, and we don't want to get pulled into another quack mire in the -- qawg mire in the middle east. >> nothing can happen until they confirm the attack. today syrian state tv claim the rebels were behind the

attack, abandoning the information that no attack occurred. u.n officials in syria are pushing for access to the site for inspections. the group doctors without borders today said 3600 patients with neuro toxic symptoms were treated the day of the suspected it attack. they say 355 of those patients died. in san francisco a group of people gathered at a public vigil in union square to remember the victims of the attack in syria. many want the obama administration to intervene jie. all we are doing is asking the u.s. government to help so we can defend ourselves. we are dealing with a dictator never been harder, killing the left and right and the more extension they give him, the more killing he is doing. >> the use of chemical weapon bise syria -- weapons by syria

ships and part suppliers from liability in most cases if the traveler would get hurt or killed on a voyage. several other states have already passed similar laws. there a new proposed location for next year's big game and some cal fans say it is a bad call. the santa clara stadium authority wants the annual game between stanford and uc berkeley moved from memorial stadium to the newly vie stadium. the rotation would continue in 2015 with cal's memorial stadium. still some fans say they don't want to mess with tradition. >> i really think that the iconic event itself would be better served being played at one of the more traditional stadiums. >> it is taking away a little of the hometown feel that is kind of neat when you are going into the opposing area. >> both schools would have to approve the move. the big game is november 23rd at stanford stadium. new zealand is one victory away from racing for the

america's cup. new zealand clobbered italy in race one to take the best in the louis vuitton cup challenged. weather permitting two races will be held tomorrow. should new zealand win one of the races they will face usa team oracle for the cup starting september 7th. animal rights activists marched in san francisco as part of a global day of protest. they mar etched and -- they marched and held rallies that sell meat and others that sell fur and leather clothing. protesters wore blindfolds signa signa -- signifying what they say is injustice to the animals. rallies like this were held in 16 countries today. just ahead, how you can catch a glimpse of some rare and precious gems and stones. plus,. >> it just opens up a whole new world that you can't even imagine. >> a bay area woman who has regained some of her mobility

you wear as eyeglasses won't go on sale for another year, but for one bay area woman it has been a life changer. tonight jonathon bloom looks at how google glass is far more than a toy for someone living with a disability. >> okay, glass, take a picture. >> it is something tammy lou was not able to do for almost two decades. a car crash in 1995 left her mostly paralyzed. since then life is about finding work arounds. >> you just have to learn a new way to live. >> her brother installed home automation. >> i can turn the lights on and i can change the channel. >> her service dog can open doors and turn on lights. >> good boy. >> but without mobility in her hands and fingers, tammy had to give up a life long hobby. >> taking pictures was a big -- i loved to take pictures. >> for years she asked others to take the pictures, but it wasn't the same. she entered a contest to be among the first users of the wearable device called glass, and she won. >> it opens up a whole new world that you just can't even imagine. >> tammy was invited to

google's glass base camp. this is where the earliest adopters called explorers come to be fitted by their glass devices by themember staff members. >> the team met her and she was so enthusiastic and excited about the technology and such an inspiring person to be around. >> tammy it turns out is not the only quadriplegic explorer. >> the last time i tried to go camping was the time i was in a car accident. >> he used glass to make a video about her return to life after paralysis. >> this will be the first time i am apart from a caregiver for more than a few hours. >> and for tammy too, a device she can operate with her voice and head movement is a game changer. >> just being independent. i can get out and i go farther because if i need something i can text and i can use a phone. >> now tammy cruises around town taking pictures for her blog. >> you just posted a picture. >> of me taking your picture? >> and when she travels with her family she is using glass to find restaurants and get directions. >> i am helping everybody out

arizona and even into southern california. palm springs 90 degrees. possibly an isolated thunderstorm. unfortunately it looks like some of these lightning strikes would be dry lightning strikes just near yosemite which is something they do not need. temperatures around the bay area, look for low 80s inland, 60s and 50s at the coast. monday and tuesday pretty much steady in terms of temperatures. and then wednesday and thursday we climb close it -- close to 90 inland and 80 near the bay and mid60s near the coast. cooler tomorrow. >> thank you so much, leigh. people ran for their lives during the first ever great bull run held in the u.s. inspired by the spanish spectacle, the run was held at a drag racing strip in virginia. there was one minor injury. the run is scheduled to be held in the bay area next june though there set location just yet. i'm sure you will be all over that when it comes, right?
